  14. <p>     The 1940s was a decade dominated by war. From 1940 to 1945,
  15. most of the world's people were embroiled in the Second World
  16. War, the war to defeat fascism. The U.S. emerged the decisive
  17. victor: its soldiers had fought their way across the Pacific and
  18. into the heart of Europe; an industrial miracle had transformed
  19. the U.S. economy into the "arsenal of democracy," while
  20. permitting most Americans to live better than ever before; and
  21. the U.S. had mustered the will to use the fearsome new weapons
  22. created by atomic science.

  24. <p>     But from 1945 on, the Soviet Union transmuted itself from a
  25. wartime ally into an implacable, tyrannical foe, bent on
  26. ideological supremacy and hegemonic domination. The U.S. found
  27. itself leading the free world in the "Cold War" to contain and
  28. try to push back the tide of world-wide Communism. It was a
  29. frustrating, unsatisfactory war, waged at a low, often
  30. clandestine level, with uncertain, sometimes invisible victories
  31. and loudly publicized defeats. The U.S. ended the 1940s with
  32. some notable Cold War victories and some saddening losses, and
  33. a deep-seated uncertainty about whether the U.S., and democracy,
  34. would prevail.
